Non-governmental organization Open Europe and ULIE shot the information video for Ukrainian business community about biomass prospects, its economic benefits and investment forecast for this sector.
Mr. Georgii Geletukha, CEO of the Bioenergy Association of Ukraine, Mr. Kostiantyn Gura, Advisor to the Head of the State Agency for Energy Efficiency of Ukraine, Mr. Kostiantyn Pyanykh and Mr. Yevgen Nikitin from the Gas Institute of the National Academy of Science of Ukraine, who acted as experts in the video, are adamant that biomass market will develop vigorously in Ukraine.
Biomass will replace 11% of consumed energy till 2035.
Investment payback period in this sector of Ukraine is nearly the best in the world – from 2-3 through 7 years.
“We possess enormous biomass resource of 21 million mt of oil equivalent with agricultural waste claiming for the major part. The experts say agricultural biomass potential amounts to 17-20 billion cubic m of natural gas in Ukraine.
Moreover, the experts initiate energy self-sufficiency of the cities. Solid domestic waste, drainage silt etc are the source of thermo energy. The experts of the Gas Institute who once developed feasibility study for several cities of Ukraine are reassured that heat networks can be supplied with 30%. If energy efficiency of housing is enhanced it will become possible to meet energy needs of a city in full scope.
Bioenergy sector is developing intensely due to so called green tariff for electricity and incentive tariff for thermo energy from alternative sources as well as due to bidding procedures etc.
Ukrainian experts also suggest to utilize the best Lithuanian practices and to launch biofuel exchange. Now this initiative is promoted by the Bioenergy Association of Ukraine and the State Agency for Energy Efficiency of Ukraine.
Besides, experts advise that biomass heating producers would be rendered an opportunity to connect the domestic heating supply networks while mechanism of boosting the growing and using of energy plants should be elaborated in Ukraine.
Advantages of the bioenergy include CO2 emissions reduction and thus ecofriendliness.
Ukraine is able to contribute to EU objectives of energy renewable sources utilizing since Europe will need biomass import. European countries intend to reach 32% of bioenergy within energy consuming till 2035. Open Europe and ULIE also produced booklet for business community which analyzes bioenergy market in EU and Ukraine as well as presents preliminary estimate of payback in this sector.
